What to Do in Alter do Chão: The Complete Guide

Alter do Chão, in the state of Pará, earned its nickname — the Amazon Caribbean — thanks to the freshwater beaches that emerge along the banks of the Tapajós River. Between forest, beach and river culture, the village has something for every kind of traveller. Here are the outings that belong on your itinerary.

Ilha do Amor, the village's postcard

The most famous sight in Alter do Chão: a strip of white sand that rises just opposite the village, ringed by warm, clear water. The crossing takes only a few minutes by canoe or speedboat. We have written a full guide to the island, with prices and the best time of day to go.

Ponta de Pedras, away from the crowds

About 15 km from the village, this is a quieter beach with calm water and rock formations framing the landscape. A good choice once you have seen Ilha do Amor and want something more peaceful.

Lago Verde and the Enchanted Forest

A boat trip takes you to the edge of the Floresta Encantada, an area of flooded forest where the rest of the journey is made by canoe, through narrow channels and scenery that feels like another world.

Serra da Piroca, for hikers

The climb is short but takes some effort, and the reward is a sweeping view over the Tapajós River with Ilha do Amor below.

Sunset at Ponta do Cururu

A sandbank that only appears in the dry season, but delivers one of the finest sunsets in the region. Worth adding as a stop on any boat trip along the Tapajós.

When to visit

The region has two distinct seasons: the dry season, from August to December, when the river drops and the beaches appear; and the wet season, from January to July, when the water rises and boat trips through the flooded forest come into their own. To enjoy the beaches, plan your trip between August and December.

Where to stay
